Guide to Animal's of the Sierra's~ Whitetail Deer-- These ARE REALLY common in the Sierra Mountains!! Any form of deer are usually active at night time, early morning, or late evening. They can be found near lakes and streams, in the woods, or meadows. ~ Bear (black bear, other kinds are not native here) ~ Rabbit ~ Fox ~ Mule Deer ~ Black Tailed Deer ~ Mice/rats (mostly small field mice) ~ Several varieties of squirrel/chipmunk. ~ Pikas ~ Marmits ~ Raccoons ~ Free-range cattle (or even horses/mules), especially if the wolves are going down into the foothills of the Sierras and national forest lands ~Animals that are common in the Sierra's but wolves do not generally hunt~~ Snakes (rubber boa's, garter snakes, king snakes, gopher snakes, racers, northern pacific rattlesnakes, western rattlesnakes, and milk snake's) ~ Coyotes (very common) ~ Birds (Vultures, and several species of hawks in addition to many types of small to mid sized songbird's. Stellar's Jays are super common, especially in the Sierras.
